Named after the sea captain who sought refuge from the storm in the town's protected harbor in 1848, Baileys Harbor started as a lumber town and evolved into a fishing and tourism center. As with much of Door County, the rugged landscape and scenic views often remind visitors of the charms of New England and Cape Cod. In addition to the sandy beaches, fishing docks, and both sailing and charter fishing boats, you'll also find several lighthouses including the famous Cana Island Lighthouse (1870). Ridges Sanctuary encompasses 1,000 acres of sandy ridges and wooded bogs where nature trails and boardwalks allow you to view a spectacular array of wildflowers and wildlife. You can also see Bjorklunden Chapel, a replica of a 15th-century Norwegian chapel.
