The Ringling Brothers Circus was born in Baraboo in 1884 and wintered here until 1918. Unique Circus World Museum offers a dazzling display of wagons, posters, costumes, and memorabilia. Mid-Continent Railway Museum in nearby North Freedom features steam locomotives and old-time coaches and cars. Take a 50-minute, seven-mile ride on an authentic steam train. See Al Ringling Theatre and Sauk County Historical Museum.
Nearby are Devil's Head Ski Area and the International Crane Foundation refuge. South of Baraboo is Devil's Lake State Park, with sheer cliffs as high as 500 feet above the water. Spring-fed Devil's Lake has beaches and boat landings at either end. See Indian mounds created by ancient tribes and exhibits on Ice Age topography.
