Named for founder Henry F. Janes who settled here in 1836, the seat of Rock County is located in the valley of the Rock River. The city is home to a large General Motors assembly plant. Abraham Lincoln slept here in 1859 when he visited Tallman House, an impressive Italianate villa that is now part of the Lincoln-Tallman Restorations. The nearby Wilson-King House was built at about the same time for a family of more modest means.
You can also visit the Rotary Gardens, where 14 international theme gardens surround a lovely two-acre lake. Tours are offered of the GM complex, a largely-automated car assembly facility.
