Located on the Mississippi River, La Crosse is known for the scenic bluffs and palisades that surround it. Enjoy the panorama from Granddad Bluff, 540 feet above the city, or cruise the river on the La Crosse Queen, a replicated double-decker sternwheeler, or on the Island Girl luxury cruiseliner or the steam-powered Julie Belle Swain, a replica of a 100-year-old riverboat. Hixon House, a 15-room mansion built in 1857, is furnished with many original Victorian and Oriental pieces. Visit Swarthout Museum (located inside the La Crosse Public Library) and Riverside Park where America's three largest paddle wheelers, The American Queen, the Mississippi Queen, and the Delta Queen, stop and dock at the levy. Be sure not to miss City Brewery; its water towers are painted to resemble a six-pack of beer.
