The surrounding Nicolet National Forest forms the economic basis of this north woods village -- for both lumbermen and vacationers enjoying outdoor recreation. The Lumberjack Special features a 20-minute steam train ride from Laona's historic railroad depot to the Camp Five Museum and Ecology Complex. The camp site includes a working blacksmith shop, logging museum, animal barn, nature center, country store, pontoon boat excursion, and surrey ride through the forest.
For more forestry history, you can visit the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp established in 1880 in Lakewood. You'll find gaming opportunities at the casinos on Mole Lake near Crandon.
