Car

Madison lies at the junction of Interstates 90 and 94. The Beltline Highway, which incorporates portions of U.S. 12, 14, 18, and 151 along its route, bypasses the downtown area and provides the quickest way to get across town. Rental cars are available both at the airport and at in-town locations.

While it is not difficult to negotiate Madison via automobile, a couple of factors complicate the city's street layout. First, the city lies on the shores of and between two main lakes, Lake Mendota to the northwest and Lake Monona to the southeast. Smaller Lake Wingra, west of Lake Monona, also figures in traffic patterns. Second, in downtown Madison, traffic patterns in the vicinity of the Wisconsin State Capitol include many one-way streets and four diagonal thoroughfares, one of which is State Street pedestrian mall. You'll need a good map that clearly shows street directions. You may choose to leave your car in one of the many public downtown parking ramps and travel in the compact downtown area on foot.

Public Transport

Bus: Madison Metro Transit System (608-266-4466) operates public bus service within the city. Basic fare is $1.50; transfers are free, but must be requested when fare is paid. Discount ticket books are available, as are one-day, unlimited ride Visitor Passes ($3.40).

Taxi: Your best bet is to call for taxi service. Firms such as Union Cab Cooperative (Madison's largest cab company, 608-242-2000) and Madison Taxi (608-255-8294) meter fares, while Badger Cab (608-256-5566) operates under a zone-rate system.

Airport

Dane County Regional Airport (MSN), also known as Truax Field, lies on Madison's northeast side. The airport is very close to downtown and is served by several major airlines.

Transportation from the airport to downtown Madison:

Aside from rental cars, taxis are the only ground transportation available between Dane County Regional Airport and downtown Madison.
