A fine harbor on Lake Michigan made this city a center of sportfishing, shipbuilding, and industry. Wisconsin Maritime Museum tells the story of 150 years of maritime history with 60,000 square feet of exhibits (some interactive); it includes a model ship gallery and a Children's Waterways Room, where kids can "sail" a boat on a miniature Lake Superior. Rahr-West Art Museum, a historic 13-bedroom Victorian house with period furnishings, displays art, Chinese ivory carvings, and an extensive collection of dolls from around the world. The SS Badger car ferry operates between here and Ludington, Michigan--a four-hour trip. Also see Lincoln Park Zoo. To the west of town is Pinecrest Historical Village, an outdoor interpretive museum featuring 20 restored buildings, exhibits, gardens, and a nature trail.
