Milwaukee lies at the intersection of Interstates 43 and 94, with I-794 providing highway access to the eastern part of town and the lakefront. Streets follow a rough grid pattern, with numbered streets running north-south beginning on the west bank of the Milwaukee River, with 1st Street the closest numbered street to the river, 2nd Street parallel and west, etc. Some city streets are not numbered, however, so a good map will help guide you around town. The Menomonee River marks the dividing line between streets designated North and South.
