One of the oldest settlements in Wisconsin, Mineral Point originated with lead mining and is today a recognized artists colony. The earliest miners dug crude shelters into the hillsides, thus earning the nickname "badgers" for all Wisconsites. The miners who arrived in the 1840s from Cornwall brought a distinctive stone building tradition along with their advanced mining skills. The Pendarvis State Historic Site preserves a cluster of their restored log and stone cottages. Nearby, Shake Rag Alley, the original settlement, is an arts and cultural center. You can also visit Gundry House, an impressive Italianate mansion of the late 1800s, and the Mineral Point Depot, the oldest existing railroad station in the state.
