A fine manmade harbor (dug in 1870) makes this picturesque town an excellent charter fishing and yachting, center on Lake Michigan. The town is noted for its many 19th-century homes, such as Eghart House, a restored Victorian mansion built in 1872. One the city's chief landmarks, St. Mary's Catholic Church, a Gothic structure erected in 1882, is adjacent to the 1860 Light Station and Museum. Fish Day, a massive one-day outdoor fish fry, is held the third Saturday of July. A few miles to the east, the Ozaukee County Pioneer Village in Saukville preserves a collection of 19th-century buildings including a smokehouse, railroad depot, and trading post. In West Bend, Lizard Mound County Park has 31 outstanding prehistoric effigy mounds. Downtown Port Washington has the largest concentration of pre-Civil War buildings in the state.
