Ripon began life as a utopian experiment founded by the socialist-minded Wisconsin Phalanx in 1844. Although the town called Ceresco succeeded economically, it was absorbed into a rival neighboring village after a few years and Ripon was born. One of the commonly-owned long houses built by the first settlers survives on the west side of town. Whigs, Democrats, and Free Soilers meeting in the Little White Schoolhouse in 1854 to organize a new anti-slavery party gave birth to the Republican Party. You can visit the building and the lovely campus of Ripon College on a hill above the southwest corner of the town.
South of the city, Larson's Famous Clydesdales offers performances and tours of the stables where the famous horses are raised and trained. Ripon calls itself Cookie Town U.S.A.; visit the Rippin' Good Cookie Outlet store Tues.-Sat.
