Mineral springs found by early settlers made this city famous as a health spa. Carroll College was the state's first college and is named for a signer of the Declaration of Independence. See Waukesha County Historical Museum and nearby East Troy Electric Railroad Museum and Kettle Moraine State Forest. Waukesha is the home of the inventor of the electric guitar, Les Paul. It is also the home of the Waukesha Symphony Orchestra and the Waukesha Civic Theatre. The historic downtown has more than 50 art galleries, as well as antique shops and specialty stores.
