Although the facility and its grounds have been closed for a long-overdue renovation, the classic Griffith Observatory -- featured in such legendary films as Rebel Without a Cause -- is expected to reopen in late 2006. This is the largest planetarium on the West Coast -- its 12-inch telescope brags of being the most peered-through on Earth and its situation on Mount Hollywood affords a brilliant view of the city. The Hall of Science features 6-foot globes of the Earth and Moon, as well as spacecraft models and more.

While the main observatory is closed, a satellite office in the northeast corner of Griffith Park features a modest astronomy display, a planetarium theatre, and a telescope for nighttime viewings.
