Comprised of three separate ranger districts, Cleveland National Forest extends over 130 miles, from California's Orange and Riverside counties south to within five miles of the Mexican border. Trabuco, the northernmost district, contains the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness and the lofty elevations of the Santa Ana Mountains. Palomar, the central district, is famous for the Palomar Observatory, which lies within the district's boundaries. Challenging Aqua Tibia Wilderness is also located within the Palomar Ranger District. Descanso Ranger District contains both the Hauser and Pine Creek Wildernesses, as well as the more accessible Laguna Mountain Recreation Area. The southernmost portion of the Pacific Crest Trail crosses this southernmost district of Cleveland National Forest. Many southern Californians go to the Cleveland National Forest to take a break from the cares of urban life. Visitors to the forest come to hike, ride horseback, swim, picnic, and camp. There are more than 30 campgrounds scattered through the forest. Some are open seasonally while others are available year-round. Please call the forest for campground details. Bird-watchers should keep an eye out for peregrine falcons. Motorists and bicyclists can take advantage of the forest's 24-mile Sunrise Scenic Byway. Reservations: Campsite reservations can be made by calling 877-444-6777. A fee is charged.
