The beautiful beaches of this Riviera-like town 15 minutes north of San Diego attract swimmers, beachcombers, surfers, and snorkelers. The town center of this haven for the wealthy is full of art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, and it's fun to explore on foot. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego features changing exhibits of paintings and sculpture plus a permanent collection that focuses on minimalism and conceptual art. For a glimpse of the modernist style of architect Louis Kahn, tour the campus of the Salk Institute. You can also visit the Stephen Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography; it contains interactive exhibits as well as aquariums exhibiting warm water and cold water species. Torrey Pines State Reserve has fine ocean views.
