Huntington Beach has been the center of the Southern California surfing scene since the 1920s. This is where Duke Kahanamoku introduced the sport from Hawaii and where you'll find what are reputed to be the best surfing beaches in the state. The US Open of Surfing is held here in July. You can visit the International Surfing Museum or stroll along the Surfing Walk of Fame near the Huntington Pier. With 8.5 miles of beaches, you'll find plenty of opportunities for sunning, swimming, and volleyball. The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve features a 1.5 miles hiking trail through a restored salt marsh. Rare and endangered birds as well as unusual marine life forms can be viewed and the Interpretive Center provides an excellent introduction to the area.
