Built in 1888, this ornate, red-roofed Victorian masterpiece is Coronado's top attraction and a National Historic Landmark. Over its long history the "Grand Lady by the Sea" has hosted countless movie stars and dignitaries, including Charles Lindbergh, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Charlie Chaplin, Frank Sinatra, and every U.S. president since Lyndon Johnson. It was the setting for the 1958 movie Some Like It Hot which starred Marilyn Monroe. It's also said to be haunted by the ghost of one Kate Morgan. The Del (as it's called by locals) has some 680 guest rooms as well as beach houses and cottages. It offers a spa and fitness center, bicycle rentals, tennis courts, a pool, and some 10 different restaurants and bars. Visitors can learn more about the hotel and its rich history by taking a self-guided walking tour; free maps are available at the concierge desk. For those who would rather relax and soak up the hotel's ambience along with some sunshine, there's the outdoor deck of the hotel's Babcock & Story Bar, which offers cool drinks, tasty tapas, and views of the dramatic Point Loma headlands.
